Areas of Responsibility in a News Editing Office and Newsroom (Television)



Below you will find a list of the most important jobs in a news editing office.

Newscaster/Newsreader


S/he presents the news in front of the camera. S/he introduces reports and conducts interviews.

Finalising Editor


S/he is responsible for the content of a news programme or bulletin on the day on which it is broadcast. S/he plans and co-ordinates the items and delegates tasks to the other editors.

Editors


They are responsible for writing the texts and selecting the film/photographic material used in a news report. Some of the editors read out their reports themselves (this is recorded in the dubbing room).

Meteorological Editors, Weathermen/Weatherwomen


People who work in the meteoroligical department, preparing and presenting weather reports and forecasts. Most of them are meteoroligists.

Director


S/he checks and co-ordinates processes during the live broadcasts from the control room. S/he gives instructions to the camera team, to the engineers and technicians etc.

Camera man/Camera woman


S/he records on film what takes place in the television studio or on location.

Cutter


S/he edits the raw material – that is everything that the cameraman has filmed on location – cutting and pasting to produce the news item in the form in which it will be broadcast.

Sound engineer / Sound technician


These people are responsible for recording sound and speech and for mixing the sound (in the dubbing room).

Camera engineer / Camera technician


They co-ordinate and monitor the camera shots during studio broadcast and add in film material during a news programme (from the playback room).

Graphic Designer


S/he creates the graphics for the programme or combines them. The graphics are then coloured in the ‘paint box’.
