Abstract

The traditional values of journalism are objectivity, reliability, balance and accuracy. But what about online journalism? Internet news reporting has many advantages: establishing links to different sites, updating or putting in new information – all this can be accomplished with little effort - and in practically no time. Anyone with a computer and a modem can enter the journalists’ arena. However, the risks involved in trying to be the first with the latest piece of news are considerable. There is a danger of representing the facts incompletely or inaccurately, or even of falsifying them altogether. Huub Evers explores these risks and looks at the implications of the lack of moral standards in online journalism.
