From Telepresence to Social Presence:The Role of Presence in a Network-Based Learning Environment.Author: Tammelin, Maija Published: Helsinki, 2003 Source: http://www.edu.helsinki.fi [26.09.2003]. |
Abstract In this article, the author examines and defines two different types of presence. The first one is called 'telepresence', a situation in which the operator of a distant mechanism has a feeling of being present at the point where the mechanism is. This is especially useful for dangerous work in mines or difficult surgical operations. The other type is 'social presence 'in which people who are working together via electronic networks feel as if they were in the same room. Tammelin describes occurrences of 'social presence'. |
