Image compression

Images and graphics with different storage modes can be viewed here. The goal consists of developing an eye for good and bad graphics distributed over the Internet. The table contains previews (thumbnails) of the images that open in an another browser after clicking on them. Next to the preview images are the file sizes of the images that can be opened. All images have a width of 240 pixels with different heights, except for images in the "print template" which may be several hundred up to more than a thousand pixels wide and high. The difference between a weak and a strong compression of JPGs is evidenced in striae with extreme contrast transitions or even with color blending. GIF files can only display 256 colors. Faces, color blending or shadows become areas with very few colors.

File sizes of images on the Internet


A complete HTML document with all captured images with a size of approx. 50 KB is relatively small. That is, an additional 2 - 3 images of average quality can be added to the text. Starting with an overall page size of 100 KB, graphics should be used wisely so that the visitor does not have to wait unnecessarily for redundant graphics.

Print template: Original files with 300 dpi converted to JPG with highest quality. This results in very large images which may be used as print template.
JPG 80/20: JPGs with 80% quality and 20% compression.
JPG 20/80: JPGs with 20% quality and 80% compression.
GIF: Images as GIF saved in web-optimized mode.
