Investigation

Investigations and enquiry are the essential requirements for reliable news reporting. The editorial office will never rely on a single source for any news item. As a rule everything is checked against other information sources: how does the international news agency Reuters present the event, how is the same event described in the German press agency, dpa, what does the office’s own correspondent on the spot know about what has occurred? The basis of every investigation is, according to the media expert Walther von La Roche, made up of the following steps:

1. First question: is there any truth in the matter?
2. Second question: what is still missing?
3. Listen to the other side.
