Abstract

Dieter Baacke states his opinion on the weaknesses of media education. He deplores the discipline's insufficiency in theory and practice and the lack of employment opportunities. Baacke draws an outline of a self-critical and self-confident media education that evaluates its own history and shows where it has been successful. According to Baacke, success also depends on participation in media production, e. g. through local TV and radio channels etc.

Baacke, Dieter

Dieter Baacke (1934-1999) was a lecturer in education at the University of Bielefeld. He was a founding member and chairman of the German "Gesellschaft für Medienpädagogik und Kommunikationskultur" (GMK). His pedagogy-based concept of "media literacy" has had a lasting influence on both academic and political discourses as well as in practice.
