Abstract

Drawing on the Mexican writer Carlos Fuentes, Tornero regards "the media – like books – [...] as extensions of our understanding [of ourselves]". According to Tornero, the media "play a key role in people’s knowledge of the world and in fact provide a sphere that shapes how relationships among citizens are forged". He therefore considers media education as an essential part of teaching and learning democratic citizenship.
