Selecting the Subjects and Objectivity

© Wolfgang Schmidt

What can and what cannot become the topic of a news programme depends on a wide variety of factors. If it is to be shown on television, then the image-value – i.e. whether or not the topic lends itself to visual illustration - will play a key role. This could mean, on the other hand, that events without appropriate visual material will be under-represented or even totally ignored. A heavy regional storm, for example, would only be reported if interesting visual material were available. A catastrophic famine in the ‘third world’ often only develops into a major news item when dramatic film material is on hand. “Reality” and “news” can, for this reason, never be one and the same and that frequently quoted “objectivity” in the news can never be more than an attempt at moving a step or two in the right direction.
